Randika Fernando was 24 years of age and living near Pitipana in the Negembo district when he was blessed with a baby girl. In 2005, with baby Harmisha aged 16 months, it was diagnosed that she had a fatal heart disease. A letter from the consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at the Apollo Hospital in Colombo explained how Harmarshi had a cyanotic congenital heart disease, tetralogy of fallot, large cono ventricular septal defect and severe pulmonary stenosis. Harmarshi required urgent total surgical correction.
The first report back from the Apollo hospital on 2nd April 2006 indicated a successful procedure. Harmarshi recovered in intensive care for 3 days, and only her mother could see her to avoid any chance of contamination as her immune system was weak. She came off the supporting machines after three days and returned home.
Harmisha was visited again in April 2008 and we are delighted to report that the baby is now a 3 year old girl and is extremely well. In 2009, Harmisha is expected to attend nursery school.
