Most teachers in Nepal have had no teacher training, and instruct their students in a very informal manner. Schools have very little resources and rely on a few text books and the “chalk and talk” method of teaching the curriculum.

The goal of this Teacher Training & Resources programme was to provide schools with an insight into creative lessons, and to inspire the teachers to use resources in an interesting and productive environment. The Ugrachandi Secondary School in Nala 4, near Banepa, Kavre Disrict was provided with resource boxes containing coloured paper, glue, scissors, materials for puppet making, wood block printing, drawing and colouring, card making, hanging decorations, dominoes and creative maths lessons, as well as a 2 CDs with educational games and curriculum resources.

These, together with appropriate demonstration lessons and training, ensured that the teachers were empowered to teach in a more interesting manner, and that their students benefit with a new experience of quality, creative classroom lessons. The school hosts 400 students. This project was sponsored by TVF’s general donations.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the poorest in Asia. According to a recent National Achievement Survey conducted among students of Grades 3 to 5, it was seen that their examination marks averaged 27-50 percent. There could be various reasons for this inferior quality of education in government schools. Absence of adequate trained teachers, materials and resources constraints, lack of teaching-learning environment and dearth of proper monitoring could be some of the reasons.
