The Girigisabo Project is situated in the Rulindo district of the northern province of Rwanda. The area is mountainous and highly populated. The project will assist 65 families which are currently unable to produce sufficient or nutritious food and can only eat one meal a day. This is because of declining farm production due to land overuse and lack of affordable fertilizer to replenish depleted soils.
To overcome this problem, this project will train 65 farmers in sustainable agriculture techniques including kitchen gardens, manure composting, vegetable growing and water harvesting. Composted animal manure and green matter will provide free fertilizer and families will learn how to grow a wider variety of vegetables and crops so they have enough to eat and surplus to generate income.
TVF’s grant covered the cost of sustainable agriculture training and vegetable seeds for the group.
